In a quiet room, away from the guests, she unfolded a small square of paper rouge. Thin, dry, its red held without gloss or shine. She moistened it slightly, then pressed it gently to her lips. The color bloomed slowly. It surprised me how natural it looked. Not painted, but transferred. As if the red had always belonged to her. Outside, roses climbed along white walls. Their scent was fresh. This was the rose of Suzhou: never excessive, always balanced.
